ATL UNTRAPPED: Back Outside
There’s a concert for everyone in June
Summertime is here! This means more time for concerts, the re-opening of timeless outdoor venues like Lakewood Amphitheatre, and a slew of music industry legends coming into the city to perform. So far, June follows that trajectory, with highly anticipated concerts from Gunna and Flo Milli, 21 Savage and JID, and Lola Brooke, among many others. Furthermore, Birthday Bash is also returning this month, and if it’s anything like it was last year — complete with a stacked line-up of 21 Savage, GloRilla, and NLE Choppa, as well as surprise guest performances from J. Cole, Cardi B, and T.I. — local concertgoers are in for a real treat. From low key shows that boast lineups loaded with promising Atlanta up-and-comers to huge arena concerts, here are all of the hip-hop and R&B music events that you should have on your radar this month.
Tue., June 4 — Fri., June 7
Robert Glasper, City Winery — GRAMMY®-winning pianist, producer, songwriter, and musical arranger Robert Glasper returns to Atlanta this month for a four-night stint at City Winery. In recent years, the prolific artist has released several albums, including 2022’s Best R&B Album winner Black Radio III, the Apple Music-exclusive holiday EP In December, and the latest Dinner Party — a collaborative outfit featuring Glasper, Terrace Martin, Kamasi Washington, and 9th Wonder — project Enigmatic Society, among others. Needless to say, Robert Glasper has a lot of really great music to share with concert attendees. The Houston native and music industry veteran is blessing Atlanta with eight shows over the course of four days, and some of those shows are already selling out. Grab your tickets as soon as possible — and get ready to experience a heavenly and soulful musical experience in one of the city’s swankiest live music venues.

Lola Brooke, Hell — Brooklyn-born emcee Lola Brooke has been one of the most exciting rap artists to watch since her 2021 breakout, and recently platinum-certified hit single “Don’t Play With It.” While her beat selection is incredible in its own right, Lola Brooke’s voice is what really arrests listeners — it’s evocative, powerful, and noticeably deeper than many of her contemporaries, male or female. Add in the fact that she is also 4’10” and you can’t help but immediately recognize her distinct presence, on and off wax. This past November, the 30-year-old artist cemented her years-long grind and sensational rise in rap with her debut album, Dennis Daughter, and this month, she’ll be hitting nine cities on the East Coast in support of the record. Lola Brooke’s Back to Business Tour hits Atlanta on Saturday, June 8, and it’s only right that she’ll be performing at the Hell, the Masquerade’s rowdiest venue. Meet and greet tickets are available.

Gunna, Flo Milli, State Farm Arena — We’re living in a new era of Atlanta hip-hop, an era that follows a controversial government crackdown on one of the city’s most influential record labels, a string of tragic losses, and a huge pop culture moment that sparked one of the most notable rap beefs of all time. If you have wondered any time over the last couple of years where Atlanta hip-hop goes from here, look no further than Gunna. Since being severed from the seemingly never ending YSL RICO trial and released from jail in December, 2022, the College Park native has been unstoppable. His first post-jail album, a Gift & a Curse, was an undeniable success last summer, and it spawned fan-favorite tracks like “fuckumean” and “rodeo drive.” Now, less than a full year later, Gunna is poised to complete his historical comeback. Fresh off the release of his fifth studio album, One of Wun, Gunna is slated to wrap up his latest headlining tour right here in Atlanta June 11. The final night of the Bittersweet Tour will serve as a packed-out homecoming for one of the city’s brightest stars and most consistent hitmakers, and furthermore, it will raise money for a good cause. With the support ofthe Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) and Live Nation, Gunna has announced plans to allocate a dollar from every ticket sold on the Bittersweet Tour to his Gunna’s Great Giveaway nonprofit organization, which is dedicated to serving and uplifting inner city communities, programs, and initiatives. Clearly, there’s several reasons why you’re not gonna wunna miss this show, so secure your tickets while you still can. Meet and greet and VIP packages are available.

Caleborate, Mir Fontane, Veezy & Booney, Aisle 5 — The West Coast and the East Coast are set to collide this summer when Sacramento, California artist Caleborate and Camden, New Jersey’s own Mir Fontane hit the road for their joint You Are Not Alone Tour. To support their respective 2023 projects No More Pain and Clowns Don’t Cry, Caleborate and Mir Fontane are kicking off the summer by hitting eight different cities across North America. If you aren’t yet familiar with these phenomenal underground artists, listen to their recent collaboration, “No More Sad Songs,” and get ready to be impressed when you see them live. Ticket prices go up on the day of the show, so secure your tickets as soon as you can.

21 Savage, JID, Nardo Wick & 21 Lil Harold, Lakewood Amphitheatre — Since his sensational rise to stardom following the release of his now-classic 2016 mixtape Savage Mode, 21 Savage has been an absolute juggernaut. In just eight years, the London-born rapper has put together a catalog for the books, packed with three strong solo albums and a slew of game-changing collaborative albums — most notably including 2020’s Savage Mode II alongside Metro Boomin and 2022’s Her Loss with Drake. As evidenced from his massively underrated support role on Drake’s It’s All A Blur Tour last year, 21 Savage has the star power to headline shows and move crowds all on his own. Fortunately for his fans, however, the “redrum” rapper is bringing some good friends along for his American Dream Tour this summer, including Dreamville’s lyrical assassin JID, 2022 XXL Freshman Nardo Wick, and local up-and-comer 21 Lil Harold. This tour is overflowing with a diverse pool of talent, and it’s set to take place at Atlanta’s best summertime concert venue, Lakewood Amphitheatre. Whether you’re trying to kick it from the lawn or be up, close, and personal in the pit, 21 Savage’s upcoming show should definitely be on your calendar this month. VIP ticket packages are available.

With the support of their fellow local artist Thrice Groove, the recent collaborators will be taking over the Masquerade’s Hell venue for the sixth date of their Café Noir Tour. The tour is set to begin approximately two months after the release of Flwr Chyld and Grimm Lynn’s new Café Noir EP, a groovy and airy project that feels tailor-made for the summer. Come check out three of Atlanta’s most talented rising acts and make sure you come prepared to move your body.

Latto, Killer Mike, Boosie BadAzz, Birthday Bash, State Farm Arena — Even though it doesn’t typically get mentioned in local media roundups of Atlanta music festivals, Hot 107.9’s annual Birthday Bash concert has long been one of the city’s most important recurring music events. The one-day music festival has been a rite of passage for some of Atlanta’s most iconic hip-hop and R&B talent for nearly three full decades, and this year is no different. In fact, Birthday Bash 2024 is already poised to make history, as Clayton County’s own Latto will be serving as the first-ever female headliner for the beloved event. Other local legends like Killer Mike and Boosie BadAzz are also to pop out at Birthday Bash this year, and attendees can also expect sets from rising artists such as Hunxho, BossMan Dlow, and Rob49.
