Atlanta according to Terry Kearns
The blogger of all things art and historic - and chronicler of all buildings demolished - on the city he’s constantly exploring
Any time you see a charming bungalow get renovated, a historic building get knocked down, or a studio exhibit open its doors, Terry Kearns will be there. The bespectacled shutterbug behind the Architecture Tourist blog and Congress for New Urbanism’s Atlanta chapter board member documents the city’s fast-evolving built environment in all its glory and devastation. When future generations try to study the dumb demolition mistakes we made and the excellent art created, the retired BellSouth manager’s photos will be prime resources.
My car, or on foot while exploring a place I’ve never seen, are my favorite spots in the city to think deep thoughts by myself.
Open studio events are the best place to see art in Atlanta.
The best advice you could give an Atlanta visitor is: Find an event in the city that you like — an event you’d enjoy at home — and hang out and talk with folks. Atlantans are nice and we appreciate appreciative visitors. We might invite you along.
My favorite nature spot in ATL is the Duck Pond in Peachtree Hills.
East Atlanta is my favorite neighborhood.
The Varsity is my favorite place to go for munchies.
Clough Commons at Georgia Tech is my favorite building.
Andy Young is my favorite living Atlantan.
The weirdest thing about Atlanta is that we don’t always receive polite and acknowledging looks from strangers — but we aren’t surprised when we do.
ITP/OTP snobbery and condescension is my biggest pet peeve about Atlanta. I just hate it.
