French fries are hot right now, have you noticed? And not just at the city’s burgeoning burger joints: Every serious eatery around seems to be slicing potatoes into sticks and cranking up the deep fryer. But we can eat Michael Tuohy’s meaty, crispy/floppy pommes frites at WOODFIRE GRILL by the fistfuls (and have, unfortunately). Though typically served with his succulent roasted chicken and steel pan greens, if you ask nicely the staff will bring you a side of frites and a bit of aioli for dipping. Somehow they seem to complement most everything on Tuohy’s kaleidoscopically seasonal menu.

4969 Roswell Road 404-459-9003 It’s far from an insult to measure a restaurant’s French fries against those served at McDonald’s - no less a gourmand than Julia Child has singled out Mickey D’s fries for praise. While Fishmonger Seafood Grill in Sandy Springs offers a variety of fishy dishes and seems especially comfortable with frying items, somehow, the fries themselves stand out most vividly in the memory. Not chopped too fine, carrying just the right traces of salt and grease, crispy on the outside, soft and “potatoey within, Fishmonger’s French fries draw your fingers like an irresistible magnet.

Mickey D’s French fries are a food group unto themselves. Best hot out of the bag, pulling away from the drive-thru window, chased with a long pull of vanilla shake. Higher in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium than you care to know, McDonald’s has thoughtfully engineered its fries to enable you, the consumer, to eat as many as possible by cramming a fistful into your mouth, all at once. God bless America!

The food is good, beer is plentiful, the atmosphere is mellow, eclectic and funky and, perhaps best of all, the French fries rock. Truly addictive, these skinny, crispy and perfectly salted, oil-boiled wonders make it easy to order a huge, heaping plate and find you’ve made them disappear all by yourself.
