1123 Zonolite Road 404-892-1414 http://www.starprovisions.com Pure, fresh, simple - those are the guiding principles for the cuisine at FLOATAWAY CAFE. The appetizers are particularly exemplary of the style of cooking that has made chefs Anne Quatrano and Clifford Harrison famous. Beets with avocado and feta cheese offer a cooling, creamy, salty study in freshness. Grilled chicken livers are given a woodsy rosemary personality, countered by the sweetness of onion jam. Starters here are so good, it’s perfectly smart to make a whole meal of them.

Appetizers are a transcendental experience at FRITTI. Anyone who has ever ordered the funghi fritti (fried mushrooms) knows what we’re talking about. Just thinking about those crunchy morsels tinged with rosemary makes us close our eyes and smile. And then there’s the gossamer fried calamari. Forget the heavy dipping sauces. A spritz of lemon is all they need. But wait! Don’t fill up on apps and forgo the Neapolitan-style pizzas. A blistered, crackery crust supports well-paired toppings - pancetta with caramelized onions and taleggio cheese with apples and peas are two standouts - though the staff has softened over the years and lets you concoct your own combos as well.

The psychological difference between tapas and appetizers is slim but pointed: With appetizers, you know they’re meant to pique your hunger for bigger courses to come. It’s easy at MIDCITY CUISINE, though, to simply share a table full of chef/owner Shaun Doty’s irresistible hors d’oeuvres and apps. Saffron-scented risotto balls, watermelon salad with goat cheese and basil, fava beans zinged with pecorino and mint, and wild mushroom crostini that tastes like a vegetarian version of creamed chipped beef are but a few of the carefully crafted nibblers. Who needs entrees? “1545 Peachtree St. 404-888-8700. www.midcitycuisine.com”

Chef Michael Tuohy’s California-inspired cuisine is all about the joyful dance of the season’s flavors. Nowhere does that come through more strongly on his ever-evolving menu at WOODFIRE GRILL than in the appetizers. Divided into “tastes” and “small plates,” a recent meal included summer-sweet corn soup with basil and roasted pepper puree; a plate of flash-fried squash blossoms stuffed with mild goat cheese and served with a roasted beet emulsion; and local peaches wrapped in prosciutto with blue cheese and fig puree. These dreamy dishes will be long gone by the time you read this, but swing by soon and see what new beauties Tuohy has whipped up. “1782 Cheshire Bridge Road, 404-347-9055. www.woodfiregrill.com”

The fried mushrooms are one of the city’s best snack dishes right now, but we also love the fried smelts and the potato croquettes with Gorgonzola. Excellent salads. The main deal is pizzas - we love ‘em all.
